Ulpan

Origin of the Ulpan

The word “Ulpanim” is the plural form of the word “Ulpan” which indicates a teaching instruction or a studio. Ulpan is a school or an institution which teaches Hebrew. Israel was created in 1948 and soon after this event the concept of Ulpan came into being. The first Ulpan was set up in Jerusalem in 1949 and since then more than 1.3 million have benefited from the Ulpanim. The main reason for the inception of the Ulpan was to bring together the thousands of refugees that were pouring in to the country from all over the world. There were immigrants from Middle East, the oppressed communities of Africa, immigrants from war-torn Europe etc. and while they were all identified as Jewish they belonged to different cultures and they spoke different languages. The Ulpan was conceptualized to help all these refugees and new entrants to learn Hebrew. It was believed that one language would help bond everyone and they would be able to develop a sense of identity and statehood.

The Ulpan ensured that the immigrants were taught language skills at the basic level which included understanding, conversing and writing. The Ulpan also uses this medium to educate people about the history and geography of Israel along with its culture and the social life. New citizens get acquainted with all the country has to offer in terms of a new life and a new social set-up in a new environment within the structure that the Ulpan offers.

The Different Types of Ulpan Ulpan comes under different types like

Students are expected to arrive four days in advance for preparation and they have to stay for four days once the program ends which makes it a total of 155 days. The Ulpan classes have strength of about 2-2-5 students and the aim of the Ulpan program is to ensure students are conversant with Hebrew as a language, that students are able to read newspapers and simple texts which will then serve as a base for higher studies. The Ulpan program involves day seminars on current Jewish and Israeli events, lectures on Judaism and on Israel itself, tours to historic sites and hikes are also organized. The Ulpan aspires to educate young adults in Hebrew language skills and teach them about the various aspects of Israeli culture and society.
